MediaKids is a photography-based CCA designed to develop students’ 21st Century Competencies through creative visual communication.

Through structured and guided experiences, students acquire foundational and intermediate DSLR photography skills while learning to apply composition techniques across a range of indoor and outdoor contexts, including thematic shoots and school events.

The programme also encourages visual storytelling through creative setups using props and everyday objects, while introducing students to emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that shape modern image creation and editing.

Beyond photography, students gain introductory experience in virtual environment building, using elements of Augmented Reality (AR) and coding to showcase their work. Throughout the programme, students document, reflect on, and share their learning on a digital platform that supports writing, curation, and peer feedback.

Through MediaKids, students grow into confident, creative, and digitally literate individuals who are equipped to express themselves meaningfully and contribute positively in an increasingly visual and technology-driven world.

MediaKids gain real-world experience as official photographers for school events, participants in national competitions, and contributors to exhibitions. These opportunities allow students to showcase their creativity while strengthening their collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills, preparing them to express their ideas confidently through photography.

Telling Their Own Stories

Four children in school uniforms hold Nikon cameras, photographing a small bird nest with eggshells on a table.

These are some of the composition techniques which our MediaKids have learnt in photography. During their weekly CCA, they have the opportunity to handle a DSLR, as well as learn about its functions and how each of the functions is vital to capturing a good photograph. They extend their skills in school through creative photography with props.

Zoe, a Primary 4 student says, “It feels great to be using a professional camera as part of our CCA. I have learnt how to hold the camera properly to capture images.”

Our MediaKids’ works are reviewed by their trainer, who gives them constructive feedback on their photographs. This provides our MediaKids an insight on what they did well and how they can improve in their photographs.

“I learnt that when we share our work and give feedback to one another, we can all get better at our skills and techniques,” says Jiu Ting, a Primary 5 student.

MediaKids also have the opportunity to hone their photography skills through outdoor shoots at locations such as Telok Blangah Hill Park, Mount Faber, HortPark, Labrador Nature Reserve, Hill Street and Keppel Bay Bridge. They apply composition techniques as such Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines and Framing.

Their works are proudly displayed at our photo gallery in school and used in our publications! At the same time, MediaKids get to learn more about the environment and explore environmental issues through their lenses. “Our CCA lessons are conducted by a professional photographer. Through him, we learn more than just taking photographs. Our outdoor shoots include understanding the environment and nature.” says Carys, a Primary 6 student.

Marissa, a Primary 6 student, added that she enjoyed the outdoor shoots as she was able to apply the photography skills that she had learnt during CCA to real life experiences. Besides photography skills, she had also learnt about the history of the places such as Fort Canning Park. In this way, her knowledge had grown and learning took place out of the classroom.

Our students used CoSpaces to design a virtual gallery showcasing their own photographs. This interactive exhibit invites visitors to explore each student's creative work in an immersive experience. Through augmented reality and coding, students brought their photos to life, highlighting the stories and inspirations behind each image in a vibrant, virtual space.

Two 3D avatars stand in a virtual room with purple "Fun times!" and green "Nature & Aesthetics" display boards.

After completing their virtual galleries, students held a sharing session with fellow MediaKids members, where they discussed the creative process behind their work. They shared the thought and intention behind each aesthetic decision – explaining why they chose certain colours, themes, and layouts to enhance the mood and meaning of their photographs. This session allowed students not only to showcase their creations but also to reflect on and celebrate the choices that shaped their unique virtual galleries, fostering inspiration and mutual support among peers.

Special Projects

Bicentennial-Themed Coffee Table Book

To commemorate the Singapore Bicentennial, MediaKids worked on a Bicentennial-themed coffee table book, “Singapore Through Children’s Eyes” which was presented to President Halimah Yacob on 28 July 2019. President Halimah had written a foreword for the book, which was supported by the Singapore Bicentennial Office. Click here bicentennial coffee table book to find out more about the book.

MediaKids’ photographs taken during their e-CCA sessions in 2020 were featured in our book, “Here Comes The Storm Now: Our Covid-19 Diary”. It documents our Covid-19 experiences through the eyes of our educators, children and parents. This book is dedicated to frontline heroes who have kept Singapore safe so that our children can continue learning in school. Please click here to read our Covid-19 Diary.

In line with Tokyo Olympics, our students embarked on a project to gather inspirational stories and messages from our local sportsmen and sportswomen. In September 2019, we invited Singapore’s very own football legend, Mr Fandi Ahmad to our school. Our MediaKids took photographs of him being interviewed by our student leaders and conducting a football clinic for our boys in the Football CCA group.

There were other platforms which gave our MediaKids opportunities to hone their photography skills. In 2020, we met our nation’s World Number 1 Para Archer, Ms Nur Syahidah Alim. Aqeel, our Primary 4 MediaKid, not only captured the session through his lenses, but was also inspired to overcome challenges and pursue his dreams and goals.

In celebration of Biodiversity Week from 19 to 26 May 2023, we produced a coffee table book titled “A Bowl of Nature”. Our MediaKids applied their photography skills and captured biodiversity through their lenses. Click here to read more about “A Bowl of Nature”

MediaKids depicted each Olympic sport and values of friendship, excellence and respect through creative photography and props in another publication titled “In Pursuit of a Dream” Through process, they had learnt how to leverage photography to depict a sport creatively.

Photography Exhibition

A hand holds a clear glass ball reflecting an inverted cityscape, with blurred skyscrapers and a river in the background.

Titled Virtues of Creativity and Flexibility, this photograph was taken at Labrador Nature Reserve by Ser Yen. It was selected to be exhibited at the 18th Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition for the Student Category.

Accompanying her photograph was a write-up:

I like to experiment and try new things. This is my first time capturing the landscape by using a lensball. The landscape of Labrador Nature Reserve appears as an inverted image in the lensball. This image resonates with me as it reminds me of being creative, flexible and looking at things from different perspectives, especially when we are facing difficulties.

19th Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition

For the 19^th Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition, Ser Yen has leveraged photography to depict Virtues of Excellence and Determination. Out of 700 submissions, Ser Yen’s photograph was one of the 158 photographs selected for exhibition.

Accompanying her photograph was a write-up:

In our daily lives, we are running a race to reach the finishing line, and striving to be the best versions of ourselves. We should always put our best foot forward for excellence, persevere whenever we encounter any challenges and not give up.

In our daily journey, we aim to reach our potential. In the process of doing so, we face challenges with perseverance and determination. It is crucial to always strive for excellence, never faltering in our efforts to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.

Ser Yen said, “Our CCA lessons are conducted by a professional photographer. Through him, we learn more than just taking photographs. Our outdoor shoots include understanding the environment and nature, and how our cameras can capture how nature interacts.”

20th Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition

Three of our MediaKids’ works were shortlisted for exhibition from 14 to 24 June 2025 at LASALLE College of the Arts. There were over 1020 submissions from more than 570 participants.

Towards a Brighter Future

My photograph shows some people running in a race, with one runner in the lead. It reminds me of Singapore moving towards a brighter future. This connects to SGSHARE, where people in Singapore work together to make our country better. My photograph also shows what makes Singapore special — kindness, care for others, and a strong spirit through cheering each other on.

Not all superheroes wear capes - scaling greater heights

This photograph shows chips, resembling a mountain, with a superman figurine. I took this photograph because it looks meaningful and reminds me that not all superheroes wear capes. This photograph highlights that climbing a mountain is not easy. It is achievable with support from others. It is important that we could use our skills and superpowers to help one another grow and scale to greater heights as a nation.

New Beginnings

This photograph shows a baby chick hatching from its egg, ready to start a new life. Just like the chick, Singapore is also looking forward to new beginnings as it turns 60. I hope this photograph helps us think about how far Singapore has come. Since Singapore became independent in 1965, everyone worked hard together and never gave up.

Stronger Together

This photograph shows two LEGO figures working together to carry a log. It reminds me that asking for help is not a weakness. Working together can make difficult tasks easier, just like in school during group work. This image is meaningful to me because it reflects kindness, teamwork, and the idea that no one has to face challenges alone.

Follow Your Passion!

This photograph shows a figure appearing to “hatch” from an egg, symbolising new beginnings. In society, people are often discouraged from pursuing their dreams, causing many to give up. However, breaking out of the egg represents courage and growth. The photograph encourages us to follow our passions despite negativity and doubt. It reminds us that true success comes from believing in ourselves and having the courage to pursue what we love.

Work Healthily!

This photograph shows LEGO figures carefully cleaning a keyboard like professionals. We often forget to clean the tools we use every day, even though they affect our comfort and well-being. The act of cleaning can be calming, offering a short break from stress. This image reminds us to slow down, take care of our surroundings and work healthily by balancing effort with rest instead of overworking ourselves.
