Our Belief

At BRPS, we believe that all students can learn and want to learn Mathematics. We are committed to nurturing confident learners who are strong in numeracy, logical reasoning and problem solving. Through a balanced and rigorous curriculum, we equip students with essential mathematical skills for everyday life and future success, in alignment with the MOE Mathematics Framework and 21st Century Competencies.

Alignment with the MOE Mathematics Framework

Our Mathematics programme is aligned with the MOE Mathematics Framework, which places problem solving at the heart of learning. Through the purposeful integration of manipulatives, real-world contexts, thinking routines and educational technology, we actively engage students in meaningful learning.

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

Activity-Based Learning

We believe that mathematical concepts are best learnt through active and purposeful learning experiences grounded in real-life contexts. Students explore mathematical ideas using manipulatives, educational technology and authentic problem situations to construct meaning and develop deep conceptual understanding.

A range of pedagogical approaches is employed, including Math Talk Moves, Inquiry-Based Learning and Collaborative Learning. Teachers also use Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) progression and metacognitive questioning to scaffold understanding and promote deeper thinking. These approaches encourage students to articulate their thinking, justify their solutions, and communicate mathematical reasoning clearly.

Question Quest (QQ)

Problem solving lies at the heart of our Mathematics curriculum. Through the Question Quest (QQ) approach, students learn to pose meaningful questions, analyse information and apply  a range of strategies when solving both routine and non-routine problems.

This approach nurtures Critical, Adaptive and Inventive Thinking, which is core to the MOE 21st Century Competencies, and prepares students to tackle complex challenges beyond the classroom.

Digital Integration

ICT is thoughtfully integrated into Mathematics teaching and learning. Platforms such as the Student Learning Space (SLS) and other digital tools provide students with varied learning, practice and assessment opportunities.

Every Primary 1 to 6 students is provided with a Koobit account, an interactive platform that reinforces concepts through engaging practice and promotes self-directed learning. Students’ efforts and achievements are recognised through termly awards at each level.

Catering to Every Learner

We recognise that students learn Mathematics at different paces and in different ways. To support diverse learning needs, we offer a range of Support and Stretch Programmes during curriculum time and after school.

These include enrichment opportunities for students with strength and talent in Mathematics as well as targeted interventions for students who require additional support. Through differentiation, we aim to help every student experience success and develop a positive disposition towards learning Mathematics.

The table below gives an overview of our Support and Stretch Programmes which comprise both longer-term programmes and targeted short-term modules designed to meet pupils’ diverse learning needs.

Support Programme

Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) programme

The Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) programme provides early intervention for students who require additional support in foundational numeracy skills. Conducted in small groups during curriculum time, trained teachers provide targeted and individualised instruction to strengthen students’ understanding and confidence.

LSM programme is offered from Primary 1 to Primary 4, with close monitoring of students’ progress to help them achieve age-appropriate competencies while covering the Primary Mathematics syllabus. Engaging and supportive learning experiences also help students develop positive beliefs about their ability to learn Mathematics.

Math Support (Module)

The Math Support (Module) is an after-school, short-term intervention for selected Primary 4 to Primary 6 students who require further reinforcement of key mathematical concepts. Targeted instruction is delivered through customised SLS lessons and focused teaching to address specific learning gaps and strengthen foundational skills.

Stretch Programme

The Accelerated Programme to Enhance students’ eXperience (APEX) is the school's signature Stretch Programme, providing enriched learning opportunities for students with academic strengths and talents. APEX (Math) includes E2K Math programme, Mathematics Olympiad (Module), Math Enrichment (Module) and STEM-related modules.

Excellence 2000 (E2K) Mathematics programme

E2K Math programme aims to develop students’ mathematical reasoning skills and deepen conceptual understanding through an inquiry-based approach. Selected Primary 4 and Primary 5 students are engaged in independent and collaborative learning through puzzles, games and mathematical explorations specially designed for the programme. These rich learning experiences cultivate the habits of mind of mathematicians and develop key 21st Century Competencies, including critical , adaptive and inventive thinking and effective communication.

Math Olympiad (Module)

The Math Olympiad (Module) is offered to selected Primary 4 to Primary 6 students who demonstrate strong interest and high potential in Mathematics. Students are challenged with non-routine and intellectually demanding problems to develop perseverance, confidence and advanced problem-solving skills.

Outstanding students may be selected to represent the school in external competitions such as the Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS), Raffles Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), Visual Spatial Mathlympics and Annual Mathlympics.

Math Enrichment (Module)

The Math Enrichment (Module) caters to selected Primary 3 to Primary 6 students with keen interest and aptitude in Mathematics. The module focuses on developing thinking skills through non-routine word problems while strengthening reasoning and systematic approaches to unfamiliar problem situations.

APEX (STEM) modules

The stem-related modules include Design Thinking in Toy-Making, the Innovation Programme (featuring coding and the use of micro:bits), Drones Adventure and the Scientist-in-School Programme. Anchored in a rigorous inquiry-based approach, APEX (STEM) engages students in advanced problem-solving tasks that deepen conceptual understanding, strengthen inquiry skills, cultivate positive habits of mind and develop Critical, Adaptive and Inventive Thinking (CAIT) as part of enhanced 21st Century Competencies (21CC).

By adopting a comprehensive and differentiated approach, we empower every student to develop mathematical competencies, positive learning dispositions and 21st Century Competencies which are essential for lifelong learning and future-readiness.
