“Students enjoyed the Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) process as they were in charge of their own learning. Through inquiry, students collaborated with their peers and made new discoveries,” said Ms Ow.
Our students engaged in a week of Inquiry Based Learning from 7 to 14 July, and it was indeed a week of learning filled with inquiry, self-directed and collaborative learning. Prior to the IBL Week, our students engaged in flipped learning via Student Learning Space (SLS) to explore new ideas, and perform research on an assigned topic. They were then given the opportunity to explore and deepen their knowledge during the IBL Week.
Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) is a constructivist approach used in teaching and learning to explore a problem, an issue, a phenomenon or an idea. It aims to spark curiosity in our students by getting them to explore, investigate and find answers on their own so that they can build a strong foundation of knowledge by connecting new ideas and experiences with what they already know and to develop their capacity for inquiry.
Our Primary 1 students explored the world of plants. Students discovered the conditions needed to grow a plant and its different plant parts. They extended their learning of the concept of length by measuring the height of their plants and using words to describe their plants. Elias from 1 Sapphire said,” I was excited growing my own plant! It was interesting to watch different plant parts grow and learn what they do!”
Our students also took part in various IBL activities that allowed them to explore, investigate and share ideas that they have gathered about a topic. With inquiry framing the learning, students actively researched and looked for information to find answers to support their investigations. This fostered curiosity about the given topic and provided opportunities for deeper learning.
The focus for our Primary 2 students for IBL was insects and animals. They explored and learnt about them through a flipped learning approach, before extending their learning through creation of multiplication stories, a poster on insects, and using the building blocks to create an insect model. They also had the opportunity to hone their communication skills by sharing with their peers their favourite insect using their building blocks.
For our Primary 3 level, students learnt about magnets. Science kits were distributed to the students so that they can explore using magnets at home. They extended their learning by describing different methods to create a temporary magnet. “When we were exploring on Magnets, I was happy to get my Science kit! It contained many materials that I could use to learn more about Magnets!” said Fatin from 3 Opal.
For the Primary 5 level, students dived into exploring electrical systems. They were presented with a problem and had to think of how to use circuit components to find a solution. In their exploration process, they had to conduct research and engaged in virtual collaboration of ideas to learn more about parallel and series circuits. “I enjoyed the hands-on activity to form circuits and I now understand how the different components must be placed in order to get the bulb to light up”, said Melody Tan from 5 Sapphire.
